Beach Rule #1

Monday, May 25. Memorial Day. Several weeks prior, without thinking of the ramifications, Papa made an exuberant, spur-of-the-moment promise to take the boys to the beach. The next available opportunity: Memorial Day. When Daddy has a day off from work, the boys call it "Special Monday" or "Special Friday" or whatever. And we were determined to make this a really "special Monday." Along with tens of thousands of other residents of the greater Gulf Coast area. Yeah, I didn't think this one through very well. The beach on Memorial Day? That's almost a cardinal sin. Should've picked a non-descript Saturday. But I wasn't about to break a promise to my towheads.

So we packed up and headed down to Surfside for the day, along with two of my brothers - Stan and James - and their families, and Grandpa. James' wife, Shelley, took a bunch more pics, but she's been distracted with other things (oldest daughter graduating, etc) and hasn't sent them to me. And inexplicably, she is STILL without a Facebook profile or blog to post them on.

All packed up and ready to roll. Special Monday, here we come!

The initial reaction was one of uncertainty. After all, this was their first beach trip ever. "Uh, so what do we do now, Dad?"

And whenever there's a moment of uncertainty, the default reaction is: silliness from boy #1 and a look of "what the heck are you doin" from the more subdued boy #2.

Here's Beeju building an entire "sand city" just like his favourite British duo - Charlie and Lola - from the Disney Playhouse series. Working hard...

...or hardly working? Nut opted for more of the "chill" beach adventure. Though by the end, he warmed up to the water thing and had fun "splashing" in the waves (as long as he could cling tightly to Daddy and not actually touch the water).

Taking a breather to enjoy some Gatorade and shade.

Not sure which was more tiring for Peanut...our crazy fun day at the beach or the hours of sitting in traffic there and back. Thank goodness for built-in car DVD players. What a cute Nut. Both boys did amazing all day. Traffic or not, it really was a "Special Monday."

Wait. You live in Texas and your boys have never been to the beach??? That's a crime (well maybe not since Texas beaches aren't the greatest)

Ben, thanks so much for the blog! It's nice to see what's going on in your life. Although I don't think you should exclude photos of yourself! :)
We may be moving to Houston for a year (if Matt does an Iraq tour)and would love to have our girls spend some time with their cousins!
Miss you guys!

Thaks for the truck oppinion. I think Kendall is going to go for it! Wahoo! You should bring your boys over one of these weekend nights. The girls would love to play with them and you and Kendall can get caught up. We all have colds right now so you might want to wait a week, but seriously just call Kendall when you want to come.
